Celtic Guitar Strap

Here at the armoury we take each challenge as it comes.  Not everyone is interested in shields, armour or weapon sheaths.  Some people just want a nice guitar strap.  When I was asked to make this, and was told it would be a wedding gift, I couldn’t refuse.  Recently having gotten married myself, and like this couple, expecting a to become a father any time now I was pleased to play a role something that would be unforgettable.

I started with a 36″ piece of 10 oz vegetable tanned leather and two 16″ straps.  I did the carving on the leather with some traditional knot-work and the trinity at each side to represent mother, father and child as the beginning and end of life.   The braids, initials and ribboned heart in the center were the customers request.

The braiding along the edges just finished it off.

The piece was oiled with neats-foot oil, stained with a leather polish, then finished with mink oil.  Lastly the edges were gummed and stained black.
